Newsletter December 4-December 8

Here's What's Happening...

ELA: At the beginning of the year, we took two 5th Grade ELA Common Assessments (RI (A) and RL (A)). As we are approaching the end of the year, it is now time to take RI (B) and RL (B). These tests are not graded and are not part of state testing. The tests are given to see how 5th graders are progressing with the priority ELA standards thus far. We took the ELA Common Assessment RL (B) on Friday, and we will take the ELA Common Assessment RI (B) on Monday. I already let students know there is no need to stress! All I can ask is that they try their hardest! We have finished our Word Work List 4 and they are now in the PowerSchool! Starting on Monday, we will review Word Work Lists 1-4 and take an assessment on 12/12/17. We will also review titles, conjunctions, interjections, and prepositions (all of the grammar skills we have been focusing on), and take a test on Friday 12/8/17.  For Writer's Workshop, we will continue to edit and revise our narratives by adding scenes from the past and the future. Students have been doing a great job of being patient while they revise their narratives. This week we will have an on-demand writing assignment to see where students are at with their understanding of how to write a narrative.

Social Science: We are done with Chapter 4: Spain Builds an Empire! Last week, I introduced our Tic-Tac-Toe Choice Board. Students are doing AH-MAZING with each project they chose to do on the board!! We will present one of the options on Wednesday and the rest will be graded for a total of 54 points.

Ms. Gari's Math Class: Our Unit 1 is coming to an end!! Last week, we finished up the last module of Unit 1! Starting Monday we will review for Unit 1 Post-test with a study guide that we will finish and go over in class and a Jeopardy game that we will play during our early dismissal day (Tues 12/5). We are going to take the Unit 1 Post-test on Wednesday. On Thursday we will start Unit 2 with a pre-test and jump into Unit 2 Module 1 on Friday! :) If you would like to get a head start, we will be studying topics like adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, multiplying a whole number by a fraction, and calculating a "better buy" of an item.

Important Info...

TGFD
The 5th-grade class began the T.G.F.D. (Too Good For Drugs) program this week which is sponsored by the DuPage County Sheriff's Office. This program is 10 weeks long and Deputy Cliff Seward will be coming to our class on Thursday afternoons to talk to our class about different topics each week. This week, Deputy Seward talked to our class about goal setting and making sure that we are making goals that are specific, important, and positive. If you have any questions for him, this information can be found on the handout your student was given to bring home on Thursday.
