September 4-September 8

Here's What's Happening...

ELA: This week in ELA we will be introduced to two new stations we will participate in throughout the school year: Reader's Theatre and Word Work. We will read a reader's theatre titled Babysitting Superman. For Word Work we will first perform a word sort, sorting words by common word parts. We will then start our first Word Work study that will last 2 weeks and end with an assessment of understanding. Also this week we will explore the topics of inferencing, visualizing, and start writing with "I Wonder..." statements in our writing station.

Social Science: We are starting our first unit of Physical Science and this week we will focus on Chapter 14 in our textbook which is on the topic of matter. We will start with previewing the vocabulary of the chapter to become familiar with these terms throughout the week and we will start our first lesson with the structure of matter. We have some very fun hands on activities with marshmallows as well!

Ms. Gari's Math Class: This week we will dive into our first Module of Unit 6 and start our calendar collection and observations as well. In our first Module we are exploring the topics of volume, area, and dimensions. To help us better understand this topic, we will practice a lot with our mini cubic boxes to help us with each dimension of a box. We will also get into graphing on a coordinate plane and continue our discussion of x- and y- coordinates and axes and how to plot points on a grid. We will play our first work place game called "Place Coordinate Four" against the teachers and then again in partners.
