September 25- September 29

Here's What's Happening...

ELA: This week we will begin our first ELA unit, entitled "Challenges."  Students will continue with grammar skills: similes and metaphors, commas in a series, and do a close read (using our handy-dandy bookmarks) of a poem by Langston Hughes called "Mother to Son."  We will preview a book called Teammates, by taking a look at the important vocabulary used in the book. We will participate in stations to build background knowledge on segregation and perspective. Lastly, we will begin our writer's workshop model of Narrative writing by learning about ways to generate ideas of a narrative. We will start that by writing about a small moment centered around an important person in their life.

Social Science: Students are doing great so far on their Elements project! Many groups have finished the information sheets and are moving onto designing posters. I will give them more time on their projects this week, while also finishing Lesson 2 about physical properties and changes. We will be doing another Quick Study, open note/book quiz on Friday.

Ms. Gari's Math Class: We are going to finish Unit 6 Module 3 this week, working on finding the volume of multiple sized prisms. We will work on a Unit 6 study guide on Wednesday, going over it and playing a Unit 6 Jeopardy review on Thursday, and finishing up Unit 6 with our post-assessment on Friday.

When you get a moment, ask you child who Brad is! Brad has a business of selling baseballs and he needed our help to think of as many different dimension arrangements as possible. Below, you'll see groups of students working hard to make different boxes with the volume of 24 cubic units.
